Edward Henry Walkey

Edward Henry Walkey

Edward' Ted' Walkey (1923-2021) was a Welsh artist known for his oil paintings of local landmarks around Pontypridd.

He was born in Pontypridd on 25 October 1923 (General Register Office, 2008). On 20 September 1967, at the 7th annual Cilfynydd Camera Club meeting, he was elected as a committee member for the society (Pontypriddd Observer, 1967).

Edward married twice in his lifetime. The first was to Ms Daniels in a ceremony in Cardiff in 1963 (General Register Office, 2008). The second was to Ms Olive M Harris in the county of Worcestershire in 1993 (General Register Office, 2008).

In 2005, he sent paintings of his recollections of home to the Pontypridd Observer. Despite being struck mute by a stroke, he communicated to the newspaper that his Under Milk Wood painting '…imagined this from listening to the cassette tape of the play for voices, which was commissioned by the BBC in the fifties. Having played the tapes often I came to picture what the imagination of Dylan Thomas would have looked like in a coloured picture…' (WalesOnline, 2013).

Pontypridd Museum has had a long association with Edward Walkey and, over the span of 7 years, from 2002-2009, has acquired 7 of his artworks (Art UK).

He died on 4 December 2021 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (Findmypast, 2022).
