Edward Rumpf
Dr Edward (Ewald) Rumpf (1943-present) is a German sculptor and psychologist whose innovative and powerful pieces explore the intersection of art, mythology, and humanity.
Born on October 6, 1943, in Poznań, Rumpf's education took him to various schools in Flensburg, Munich, and Nuremberg between 1949 and 1963 (Rumpf, 2015). While attending the conservatory in Nuremberg, he performed as a violinist with the Franconian Symphony Orchestra from 1963 to 1965 (Rumpf, 2015). Rumpf then pursued musicology and Indo-European linguistics at the University of Erlangen from 1965 to 1969. In the following years, Rumpf worked as an assistant at the GfK Nuremberg research institute for psychological market research until 1971, when he became a psychology professor at the University of Kassel (Rumpf, 2015). In 1979, he earned his doctorate in philosophy and was appointed Professor by the Hessian Prime Minister. Rumpf also served as a visiting psychology professor at the "Ecole Nationale des Affaires Sociales" in Yaoundé between 1979 and 1981 (Rumpf, 2015).
He returned to the University of Kassel in 1981 as a professor and gave chamber concerts in Hesse between 1986 and 1993 (Rumpf, 2015).
When the Welsh artist Handel Cromwell Evans moved to Remsfeld in Germany, he established an unlikely friendship with Rumpf. In the 1980s, the two became fast friends and set up a small artists' paradise in the locality (Trolp, 2018).
Between 1987 and 2006, perhaps inspired by the success of his friend Evans, he kicked off 20 exhibitions of clay and bronze figures in Homberg/Efze, Schwalmstadt and Munich (Rumpf, 2015).
By 2016, they had installed 53 figures in 36 public spaces.
His most famous works are the sculpture trails in the town squares of Homberg/Efze, Rotenburg/Fulda, Beiseförth and Obermelsungen.
